The Turkey Analyst

Vol. 1 no. 8, 4 June 2008

ANALYSIS

Politics, Media and Power in Turkey

Political leaders in Turkey have tried to manipulate media for decades, and the AKP government is no exception. The AKP government is apparently bent on creating a pliant media. As much of the centrist, mainstream media turned against it in 2007, the government has assertively sought to secure its influence over media, engineering the takeover of major media outlets by friendly forces. The recent takeover by CALIK holding of the Sabah/ATV group and the machinations involving the Dogan holding are cases in point.

Where Did the Secular Republic Fail?
The ideological confrontation between Islamism and secularism in Turkey is fed by contradictory interpretations of republican history. The enterprise of secularism is either understood as having oppressed religion or as having been insufficiently true to its Enlightenment heritage. How republican history is interpreted will ultimately shape the future course of Turkey.

NEWS DIGEST: THE FORTNIGHT IN REVIEW

I. What the Columnists Say

Turkish newspapers are bought as much for the writings of their columnists as for news. The writings of leading columnists are therefore an important indication of developments and moods in Turkey.

II. Domestic Politics
Summary: News centered on the AKP's strategies in dealing with the closure case, including rumors of a new party already being planned to succeed the AKP. A row over whether the PKK is a positive or negative force also rocked the pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party. Click here for full digest.

III. Foreign Relations
Summary: Western and in particular American officials’ statements regarding Turkish domestic politics received wide coverage, including attempts to draw conclusions on stances toward the AKP. The Iran and Cyprus issues also figured prominently. Click here for full digest.
