Anna Jonsson, LL.D.
Research Fellow
Project Director, Narcotics Smuggling in the Baltic SeaRegion: an Issue of National and Regional Security, and Constitutional Developments and Human Rights
Dr. Anna Jonsson is a Research Fellow at the Program for Silkroad Studies. She is the Project Director of the “Narcotics Smuggling in the Baltic Sea Region: an Issue of National and Regional Security”-project sponsored by the Swedish National Drug Policy Coordinator. She is also Project Director of the Constitutional Developments and Human Rights Project. Her main areas of expertise are state building processes, rule of law as a development goal, human rights protection, and organized crime and human trafficking in Eurasia.
Dr. Jonsson is the author of a book on judicial review and individual legal activism. She has also written numerous articles and research reports on the Russian legal system, human trafficking, transnational organized crime, migration and access to justice. Jonsson occasionally publishes op-eds in the Swedish and American media and appears on Swedish TV and radio commenting on developments in Russia.
Dr. Jonsson holds an LL.D. in Constitutional Law from Uppsala University. Her dissertation examined judicial protection of individual rights and individual judicial acitivism in Russia, with a focus on the impact of the European Convention on Human Rights and the European Court of Human Rights on access to justice and individual legal activism in Russia. She also holds a postgraduate degree in East European Studies from Uppsala University; a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from Lund University; and also studied at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium.
Currently Dr. Jonsson teaches courses on Russian politics and European integration processes at the Department of Eurasian Studies at Uppsala University. She also teaches postgraduate and undergraduate courses on Russian and comparative constitutional law and democratic transformation in Eastern Europe at Uppsala University. Dr. Jonsson has also taught at the Riga Graduate School of Law, Latvia, at the Swedish Police Academy, and at Örebro, Stockholm, Gotland and Kalmar universities in Sweden. She has been a Visiting Researcher at American University's Trnasnational Crime and Corruption Center and its Washington College of Law, and at the Institute of State and Law at the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow. She speaks Swedish, English, Russian, French, and some German.
