Dr. Svante E. Cornell

is Research Director of the the Central Asia-Caucasus Institute & Silk Road Studies Program Joint Center and a co-founder of the Institute for Security and Development Policy. His specialization is in security issues, regional politics, and state-building in the Caucasus, Turkey, and Central and Southwest Asia. He holds a Ph.D. degree from Uppsala University, an Honorary Doctoral degree from the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, and a B.Sc. degree from Middle East Technical University, Ankara.

Karl Harbo

Karl Harbo is Senior Fellow at the Central Asia-Caucasus Institute & Silk Road Studies Program. Mr. Harbo joined the institute in February, 2007 after retiring from the European Commission. From 2002-2006 he served as Head of the Delegation of the European Commission to Afghanistan.

Gareth Jenkins

Gareth Jenkins is a Nonresident Senior Fellow with the Central Asia-Caucasus Institute & Silk Road Studies Program Joint Center and its Turkey Initiative. He is a writer and analyst based in Istanbul, Turkey, where he has been resident since 1989.

Dr. Anna Jonsson

is a Senior Research Fellow. She specializes in Constitutional Law and individual legal activism, primarily in Russia and Eurasia. Dr. Jonsson holds an LL.D. degree in Constitutional Law, a a postgraduate degree in East European Studies from Uppsala University, and an LL.M from Lund University.

Michael Jonsson

is a Research Fellow. His primary expertise lies in the field of terrorist financing, money laundering and organized crime. Mr. Jonsson pursues a Ph.D. Degree in Government at Uppsala University.

Marlene Laruelle

is a Senior Research Fellow. Her main areas of expertise are Nationalism, national identities, political philosophy, intellectual trends and geopolitical conceptions of local elites in Russia and Central Asia.

Christopher Len

is Asssitant Editor of the China and Eurasia Forum Quarterly. His field of research is energy security and regional cooperation in Asia. He holds a MA Joint Honors degree in Philosophy and Politics from the University of Edinburgh, UK and a Masters in International Studies from the Peace and Conflict Research Department at Uppsala University, Sweden.

Erica Marat, Ph.D.

is a Research Fellow with the Joint Center. She specializes in organized crime, military institutions, and state-building in post-colonial states, with a special interest in the Central Asian region. She holds a Ph.D. degree from the Graduate School of Social Sciences at the University of Bremen, Germany, and an MA degree in Sociology from the Central European University/ University of Lancaster

is a Senior Fellow. A retired Major General, he is an expert on military reform, and former Rector of the Swedish National Defense University.

Niklas Nilsson

is a Research Fellow with the Joint Center and Assistant Editor for the Central asia-Caucasus Analyst. He holds an M.A. Degree from Lund University. His main research interests are minority politics and regional security in the South Caucasus.

Nicklas Norling


is Research Fellow and Assistant Editor of the China and Eurasia Forum Quarterly. He holds a MA degree in Political Science from Stockholm University, and has also pursued graduate studies at Stockholm University’s International Graduate Program, at Uppsala University and at the Swedish National Defence University.

Sebastien Peyrouse

is Nonresident Senior Fellow. His main areas of expertise are political systems in Central Asia, Islam and religious minorities, and Central Asia’s geopolitical positioning toward China, Russia and South Asia.

Johanna Popjanevski


Ms. Johanna Popjanevski is Deputy Director based in Stockholm. Her specialization is in minority protection and security issues in the South Caucasus region, primarily in Georgia. She holds an LL.M. degree from Lund University in cooperation with the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law.

Amb. R. Grant Smith

is a Nonresident Senior Fellow. Ambassador Smith served as U.S. Ambassador to Tajikistan in 1995-98 and had several foreign service tours in India and Nepal. He served as DCM in the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi and Director of the South Asia Office in the Department of State. He is an expert on Tajikistan's society and politics as well as regional affairs in Central Asia, including relations with Afghanistan.
