The Central Asia-Caucasus Institute (CACI) is sponsoring a fellowship program for young leaders from Central Asia, the Caucasus, and Afghanistan.
The goal of the fellowship program is to engage persons of promise in enduring relationships involving research and policy issues pertinent to the US, Central Asia, and the Caucasus. This program brings a small group of young leaders from the region to Washington DC twice a year, for a six week orientation, research, and high level meetings with leading figures in government, business, journalism, NGOs, think tanks, and universities. Individual programs for each participant are tailored to fellow’s professional interests.

In the fall 2008, nearly 100 candidates were nominated for the fellowship and more than 60 of them have submitted their applications. Upon conclusion of a multiphase selection we are pleased to announce the winners.

is currently a Research Fellow at the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy. He received an M.A. in history from Baku State University. In 2001-2003 while a Muskie fellow, Dr. Valiyev earned an M.A. in Public Affairs from Indiana University in Bloomington, and in 2007 he earned a Ph.D. in Urban and Public Affairs at University of Louisville in Kentucky. He spent two years as a post-doctoral fellow and assistant professor at Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic. Dr. Valiyev’s areas of interest include urban terrorism and security, public policy, governance and democracy. He authored numerous articles and reviews for Human Security Journal, Middle East Review of International Affairs, Cold War Studies, Political Violence and Terrorism, Studies in Conflict and Terrorism, International Affairs, Terrorism Monitor, Central Asia and Caucasus Analyst, Urban Studies Encyclopedia etc.

is the Head of Current Analysis Section at the Department of Information and Analysis, Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia. Areas of his expertise include national security, foreign policies of small/weak states, Russian-Georgian relations and conflicts in Georgia’s breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Mr. Turmanidze is also an assistant professor of International Relations at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, where he has previously earned both his BA (2000) and MA (2002) degrees in International Relations. He currently pursues his Ph.D. Mr. Turmanidze is the editor of International Relations Theory: A Chrestomathy – the first Georgian language reader on international politics (2004) and he is the author of a monograph titled Buffer States (2006).

is the Head of Policy Analysis Division in the Political Department of the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Furthermore, Mr. Abesadze is an Assistant Professor of social and political studies at Tbilisi State University. He holds an M.A. degree from the Central European University; B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Tbilisi State University. He has been a fellow of non-degree programs at the Stanford and Georgetown Universities; and a visiting scholar at the George Washington University.

Ms. Xeniya Rogan (Kazakhstan)
is a Senior Financial Analyst, Corporate Finance, in JSC "Kazkommertsbank". She holds an M. A. with specialization in International Finance from School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) at Columbia University (2005, Muskie Fellow) and Bachelor's Degree in International Economics from Kazakh State University (2002).

Mr. Bakai Zhunushov (Kyrgyzstan)
is the founder and the CEO of iCap Investment consulting company operating in Central Asia. Mr. Zhunushov is also a Chairman of Association of Consulting Companies and an Associate Professor in an M.B.A, Department of the American University of Central Asia. His areas of specialization and interest are investment, economics, international business and development. Mr. Zhunushov holds a B.A. degree in Economics of Enterprises from UCTA University in Bishkek (2002) and Post-graduate Diploma in International Management (M.B.A. equivalent) from International Management Institute in New-Delhi, India (2004).
