An informal seminar titled "Energy and security policy in East Asia" was organized together with the Swedish Network for Oil and Gas. Visiting researchers to Uppsala, Shoichi Itoh from ERINA, Japan and Dr Janet Xuanli Liao from CEPMLP, University of Dundee, Scotland, together with Ambassador Ingolf Kiesow and Christopher Len of the Joint Center's Energy and Cooperation project discussed energy and security policies of East Asian governments.

A 3-person delegation from the Institute for Disarmament and Peace, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea visited Uppsala. During their stay in Sweden, they participated in a conflict management workshop titled "Conflict Management - Towards Confidence Building and Trust". They also visited SIPRI as well as the Swedish Foreign Ministry.

Dr Joris Van Bladel holds a PhD in Russian studies (Groningen, The Netherlands). His research was basically focused on Russian military reform (and especially the ‘soldiers’ question). He was also affiliated with Chris Donnelly who acted as the personal advisor on Russian affairs to the general-secretary of NATO. Joris Van Bladel’s research is currently focused on the question of (1) how new types of conflicts are influencing the military organization and vice versa. Studying organizational change, organizational culture and organizational learning in a national and international context provide the tools for a comparative analysis; (2) Peacekeeping: its failures and successes, decision-making in peace operations and the different perspectives on the concept of peacekeeping in the Eurasian region; (3) the announced changes in Russian foreign and defense policy.

Dr. Sangsoo LEE graduated from Peking University in 2006 where He holds a Ph.D. of the Northeast Asian Studies. His Ph.D. thesis dealt with China, Japan and Korea’s Energy Policy Comparative Studies and was entitled: “ A Study on Oil Crises and China, Japan, and Korea’s Energy Measures ”. His areas of interest are focused on East Asian Regional Cooperation and Conflict Prevention in Northeast Asia. [bio]

The conference is organized by the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), the China National Association for International Studies (CNAIS) and the China Foreign Affairs University and involved academic scholars, researchers, officials and journalists of the 39 member countries of ASEM.

Mikael Weissmann is visiting Peking University and Renmin University, Beijing, China. During his time in China he is conducting research on conflict and security in East Asia, with special emphasise on the role and impact of informal structures and processes in regional conflict prevention. He is also teaching International Relations and Research Methodology.

The stay is funded by the Swedish School of Advanced Asia Pacific Studies. Support has also been received from " Stiftelsen Paul och Marie Berghaus donationsfond" of Gothenburg University, Sweden.

Mr. Ganesh Datta Bhatta is a Guest Researcher with the Program for a period of four weeks. Mr. Bhatta is a legal scholar and lecturer at the Law Campus at Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu, Nepal. While at the Program, Mr. Bhatta’s will make a comparative study of the Nepalese and Swedish constitutions. As part of this study he will conduct several interviews with Swedish academics and experts.

Dr. Sangeeta Thapliyal is a Guest Researcher with the Program for a period of four weeks. She is a Senior Fellow at the Center for Strategic and Regional Studies at the University of Jammu. During her stay Dr. Thapliyal will be investigating the political dynamics with in Nepal in order to understand the rapidly changing political situation.

6 - 17 Mar - SUPRA Nordic Scholarship

Mikael Weissmann has received one SUPRA Nordic Scholarship from the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies (NIAS) and will be visiting the institute in Copenhagen, Denmark, for the period 6 –19 March, 2006. During his stay at NIAS Weissmann will be preparing a paper on informal conflict prevention mechanisms in Northeast Asia.

 
6-10 March - Workshop, Sigtuna, Sweden

The Executive Committee Members of the National Business Initiative (NBI) participated in a workshop on “Conflict Management and Conflict Resolution: the Art of Negotiation”. The National Business Initiative of Nepal was formed to consolidate the previous private sector initiations led by various business membership organizations in isolation. Since its formation in July 2003, today’s involvement of 14 Membership Business Organizations, the NBI has already widened the role and the scope of possibilities for the larger private sector. The overarching goal of the NBI is stated as “Sustainable peace in Nepal through just socio-economic growth”. Although the business community and the NBI cannot play a role of the principal actor in the ongoing conflict in Nepal, it can act as a facilitator, interlocutor or a conciliator.

Jan - Feb - Guest Researcher (South Korea)
Dr. Jaewoo Choo joined was a Guest Researcher in Uppsala. He is Assistant Professor/Chinese Foreign Policy at the Department of Chinese Studies at Kyung Hee University, Seoul, South Korea.

Dr. Choo did in addition to his own research on the topic "Understanding ‘developing states’ in Chinese foreign policy: Central Asian case" [more information] give a number of lectures and visited a number of departments and institutes in Sweden and Denmark.

Dr. Choo's visit has been made possible through a scholarship from the Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education (STINT).

Dr. Swanström and Ms. Björnehed visited Nepal and India. During their stay the did field research and conducted interviews.
 
17 Jan - New Researcher

On 17 January Ambassador Ingolf Kiesow joined the project as Ambassador-in-Residence. Amb. Kiesow has served most of his life as a Swedish diplomat in countries in Asia, inter alia New Delhi, Pyongyang, Tokyo and Vientiane. He has also been Consul General in Hong Kong 1997-2000. His many years as an active diplomat in Asia and the Middle East has provided him with in-depth knowledge regarding conflict issues and conflict resolution mechanisms at the very highest political and military levels. 5 December - New Researcher
On 5 December Dr. Fiona J.Y. Rotberg joined the project as a Research Fellow. Dr. Rotberg earned a Ph.D. in International Natural Resources Policy and Negotiation and Mediation from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. Her research focuses on conflict and negotiation surrounding land tenure rights and common pool resource use, and conflict resolution mechanisms for natural resource and environmental management issues. She specializes in the roles community members and cultural issues play in conflict prevention and conflict resolution. For more information visit Dr. Rotberg's personal page.

Dr. I. Yuan, Research Fellow and Director of the China Politics Division at the Institute of International Relations, National Chengchi University, Taipei, was visiting the center. Dr. Yuan is a well know exert on Chinese Foreign Policy, Chinese Domestic Politics , US-China Relations, Arms Control and Nonproliferation, and Cross-Strait Relations.

Aug 2005 - June 2006 - Visiting Researcher

Andreas Jarblad will be a Visiting Researcher in Uppsala until August 2006. He is conducting research on Chinese foreign and security policy from both regional and global perspectives. He is also working with a research project on the nature of conflict and conflict management in the Taiwan strait.
