Conflict and Security in Asia
---
GENERAL INFORMATON

The overarching aim of the Conflict and Security in Asia project is to develop a comprehensive theoretical framework for conflict prevention, management and resolution in Asia. The project is a continuation and expansion of the ongoing project on Conflict Management in Northeast Asia that was founded in 2002. At present, the core funder of this project is the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs. The research within this project includes a non-traditional view of the three concepts of prevention, management and resolution, according to which the three concepts are perceived as integrated phases of the conflict process. The working hypothesis is that such an approach to the conflict process will enhance our ability to understand and minimize conflicts. Another purpose of this research is to utilize the theoretical developments on conflict prevention, management and resolution with regard to the analysis of regional security.

To achieve this, several projects have been initiated to support the overall aim of the Project on Conflict and Security in Asia. In addition to theory development within this field, the project also focuses on developing methods and tools for conflict prevention, management and resolution. Hence, the practical and implementation aspect of the theoretical findings is being emphasized. In sum, in its effort to produce operational results, the project bridges between theorists and practitioners, thereby allowing for, and facilitating, a continuous evaluation and testing of the relevant theoretical models.

The project considers research collaboration to be an essential part of the academic research environment. Hence, the opportunity for extended co-operation between researchers is actively sought for. As a result, the project has numerous associated researchers and have formalized cooperation with several research and policy institutes. The cooperation not only contribute to a more dynamic research environment, it also facilitates the distribution of knowledge gained through the work in the project. In regard to theory development on conflict prevention, management and resolution, the project focuses on specific regional areas of interest, such as the Korean Peninsula and the Taiwan Straits. The knowledge of conflict processes will also be utilized in relation to other issues of particular interest, such as security and energy. This will thus not only be beneficial to the region, but to the wider international community as well. In addition, the project will continue to engage associated researchers, strengthen co-operation and expand the contact network in the region. It should be pointed out that this document is a living document and alternations to the content may be done.

The Conflict and Security project consists of a number of different projects:
