The Program for Contemporary
Silk Road Studies Conference
“Conflict prevention and Conflict Management in Northeast Asia”
Uppsala 8-9 April 2005
Aim and Purpose:
The aim of the workshop is to discuss and develop the existing theories and concepts of conflict prevention and conflict management. The purpose is to set the stage for new research on the concepts of conflict management and prevention through building on previous research by the Project on Conflict Management in Northeast Asia and the
individual participants of the workshop. The workshop will take a general approach to existing theories with the purpose of reviewing the existing concepts and research
regarding the theoretical foundation of conflict management and prevention. Although general in approach the workshop will capitalize on the participants leading expertise on Northeast Asia and thus will incorporate an evaluative perspective of the relevance of existing theories to the region.
Impact and Outcome:
The outcome of this workshop is threefold. Firstly, it will provide an opportunity for leading researchers to debate these issues in a favorably sized group. This gives ample
space for discussions yet the limited number of participants will aid in keeping the discussions focused and productive. Secondly, the workshop can also be regarded as a post
and pre conference workshop and thus the outcome of the workshop will draw on the previous conference and also directly benefit the upcoming one. Concretely this is done by disseminating knowledge for the future conference, thus elevating the starting point for articles and discussions in that conference, driving the research forward. Thirdly, results of discussions at the workshop will be edited together to provide a document that can foremost be used as a theoretical basis for future conferences. It will also be distributed to the research community in the participants’ respective countries.
Participants:
Participants will mainly be members of the steering committee which was formed in conjunction with the November Conference on Conflict Prevention and Conflict
Management in Northeast Asia, Beijing. They have been chosen for their academic expertise and their prominent role in the research collaboration with the Department of
Peace and Conflict Research’s Program for Contemporary Silk Road Studies. Their position as members of the steering committee also facilitates the inclusion and distribution of knowledge gained through the workshop in the upcoming conferences on Conflict Management and Conflict Prevention.
