Aim and purpose
The aim of the conference is to identify the differentiating factors with regard to the attempted measures of conflict prevention and management in the Taiwan Strait and on the Korean Peninsula. The purpose is to give a historical and theoretical perspective on approaches to conflict management and prevention to enable a constructive analysis of the present situation.
Conclusions from the conference will be twofold: Firstly, it will focus on the improvement of practical tools to handle conflicts in the region. Secondly, it will facilitate theory development in the field of conflict prevention and management since it will allow for a deeper focus and a comprehensive and specific imput to the already existing theories.
Background
This conference is a continuation of a series of conferences and workshops on Conflict Prevention and Management (CPM). It will be the third activity following a conference on Conflict Prevention and Conflict Management in Northeast Asia, held in Beijing in November 2004 and a workshop on the same topic held in Uppsala in April 2005.
The main purpose of the conference series is to assist in creating a structured forum for further research, thereby buil ding on the accumulated knowledge with regard to CPM. One step toward fulfilling this aim is to secure a certain continuity among the participants as well as the issues discussed. Yet other perspectives will also be included by inviting new participants from a wide range of relevant academic and non-academic fields. In order to assist in advancing the international research on regional CPM, invitations will be extended to prominent experts in Europe, Asia and the U.S. Although practitioners will partake in the conferences, the participants will predominantly be academics.
