The Central Asia-Caucasus Institute at SAIS, Johns Hopkins University, invites you to a Forum:

Reconnecting India and Central Asia: Emerging Security and Economic Dimensions”

Featuring

Dr. Gulshan Sachdeva, Associate Professor, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi

Wednesday, May 12, 2010
5-7 PM
Rome Auditorium, 1st Fl., The Rome Building, SAIS, Johns Hopkins University
1619 Massachusetts Avenue, N.W.
Washington, DC 20036

The Forum title, “Reconnecting India and Central Asia: Emerging Security and Economic Dimensions”,  is also title of the Joint Center’s  (Central Asia-Caucasus Institute, SAIS, and Silk Road Studies Program, Stockholm)  most recent publication to be launched at this event. Presenting will be Dr. Gulshan Sachdeva, one of the book’s four Indian authors. This volume, edited by Dr. Nirmala Joshi, delves into India’s deepening political and economic relations with Central Asia and Afghanistan, which, from ancient times, have belonged to its extended neighborhood.  A primary concern is the stability of Afghanistan where India is vigorously involved in reconstruction activities.  Integrating South and Central Asia would result in vast economic benefits  with India helping Central Asia to build capacities in agriculture, IT, service industries, science & technology,  media, etc., and, conversely, Central Asia helping to  satisfy India's increasing need for energy. Such a relationship has enormous potential for strengthening stability and security in the wider region.

The Forum opens with a reception and refreshments at 5 PM. The program will begin promptly at 5:30 PM and conclude at 7 PM. RSVP for this event is mandatory and will not be accepted after 10 AM on the day of the event. To register, please send an email with your name and affiliation to SAISCACIForums@jhu.edu or call 202-663-7723.
