What are America’s true interests in Afghanistan and the region of which it is the heart, and how should it promote them from now on? President Obama has announced his administration’s response to this question, but many issues remain to be clarified, while still others are bound to arise in the coming months and years. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad, Special Presidential Envoy to Afghanistan between 2001 and 2003, and Ambassador from 2003 to 2005, presided over the most successful phase of the U.S. engagement there. He then headed U.S. missions to Iraq and the United Nations, ending his latter assignment in January, 2009. In this presentation, Ambassador Khalilzad will offer his picture of the road ahead, drawing on his rich experience as an analyst, Afghan-born U.S. diplomat, and statesman. Dr. S. Frederick Starr, Chairman, Central Asia- Caucasus Institute, will moderate the program.
