"Turkmenistan after Turkmenbashi"

July 16, 2008

The Central Asia-Caucasus Institute at SAIS, Johns Hopkins University, invites you to:

"Turkmenistan after Turkmenbashi"

With Dr. Richard Pomfret, Professor and Associate Dean (Research), University of Adelaide, Australia

July 16, 2008
5-7 PM
The Rome Auditorium, Rome Building
1619 Massachusetts Avenue, N.W.
Washington, DC 20036

Study and analysis of Central Asia since independence has focused more on politics than economics, to the detriment of our understanding of the region. One of the few to keep a steady watch over economic reforms and developments has been Dr. Richard Pomfret. In this timely and important CACI Forum presentation on Turkmenistan, Dr. Pomfret will focus on the post-Niyazov era  and offer updates to his observations of a decade and a half on energy issues, including  Turkmenistan’s role in natural gas supply to Russia, Europe, China and South Asia.

Dr. Pomfret holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, B.C. He taught for many years at SAIS/Johns Hopkins University and is currently with University of Adelaide in Adelaide, Australia. His recent work, The Central Asian Economies since Independence, was published by Princeton University Press in 2006.

Light refreshments will be served at 5 PM.  The program will begin promptly at 5:30 PM and conclude at 7 PM sharp. RSVP for this event is mandatory and will NOT be accepted after 10 AM on the day of the event. To RSVP please send an email with your name and affiliation to caci2@jhu.edu or call 202-663-7721.
